How to Root a Leaf

Tip--Use a razor knife to cut the leaf, so it won't bruise and rot. Scissors might bruise the leaf and cause rot. Tip--The rooting medium should be a sterile soiless blend. Don't use soil from outside.

Choose a freshly cut leaf. With a sharp knife or razor, slice off the top of the leaf and make a 45 degree angle cut on the stem, with the cut side facing up.   The top cut stops the leaf from growing and encourages it to produce babies. The angle cut helps the baby plants to emerge in front of the leaf. .........   Use a pencil to poke a hole in some moistened potting mix. There are many containers you may use but make sure it has a drainage hole in the bottom. .........

Cover the plant with plastic wrap or place in a zip lock bag. Do not place plastic flat against the leaf. It must "breath". In time, roots and plantlets will form....................................

When baby plants begin to emerge, some people call them "mouse ears". Keep the plant covered as it still has some growing to do. Keep the growing medium barely moist.

Many times several baby plantlets will appear. The babies should continue to grow until they are large enough to be separated from the mother leaf.............

When the plantlets are large enough to handle, remove them from the mother leaf.   Use a pencil, or slender object such as the handle of a paintbrush to "tease" them apart.   Two of the babies are potted up. Be sure not to plant them so deep as to cover the crowns (center leaves)
